European Championship gold + fifth World Cup victory for skeleton athlete Matt Weston
Italy’s Amedeo Bagnis with silver + first European Championship medal, bronze for Grotheer
St. Moritz – Celerina (RWH) Fifth victory in six races, crowned with European Championship gold: Skeleton athlete Matt Weston is the winner of the IBSF World Cup in St. Moritz – Celerina (SUI), which also counted as the continental championship for athletes from Europe. In addition to his fifth victory of the season, the defending World Cup champion and World Champion also secured his second European Championship title after 2023.
In second place in the World Cup, Amedeo Bagnis from Italy (0.91 seconds behind), host of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, celebrated his second podium finish in a row and his first European Championship medal with silver. Yin Zheng from China came third in the World Cup in St. Moritz – Celerina, 0.98 seconds behind winner Matt Weston.
Olympic Champion Christopher Grotheer (GER) finished fourth in the World Cup in St. Moritz – Celerina, winning the European Championship bronze medal.
The Swiss local heroes, brothers Vinzenz and Valentino Buff, finished 20th and 25th on their home track in St. Moritz – Celerina.
At the start of the second run in the Men’s Skeleton, the race on the Olympia Bobrun St. Moritz-Celerina was briefly interrupted: athletes, officials and fans at the track observed a minute’s silence on Switzerland’s day of mourning for the victims of the fire disaster in Crans Montana on New Year’s Day.
In the overall standings for the 2025/2026 IBSF World Cup in Men’s Skeleton, Matt Weston (GBR, 1335 points) is on course for his third consecutive overall victory ahead of the last of the seven races. Yin Zheng (CHN, 1160) is currently second overall, ahead of South Korea’s Seunggi Jung, fifth in St. Moritz – Celerina, with 1080 points.
